 The Society for the Furtherance of Critical Philosophy

 Outline Development Plan 2006 – 2010

 

 The 70-year-old Society for the Furtherance of Critical Philosophy aims to promote independent critical thinking in the transformative Socratic tradition.

SFCP has an international outlook and engages with others in dialogue and activities about ethical issues and the challenges of personal and public life.

 

 

A.      Promotion of the Society at home and abroad

  1. Initiating and supporting a programme of activities & events that promote the aims of the Society

  2. Initiating and maintaining good UK & International links with those of like mind

  3. Initiating and supporting further East-West Dialogue e.g. two way links with Bosnia and Bulgaria in particular with UV, Professor of Philosophy in the University of Sarajevo and with AK, Professor of Philosophy at the University of Sofia

  4. Lead Organisation and Delivery of Sixth International Conference in Britain Summer 2009

  5. Management of up-to-date website to further the above

 

B.   Education       

  1. Development of active links with those pursuing parallel goals in education, in particular with those engaged in critical thinking, ethics and philosophy

  2. Continuation of training for staff working in education in order to develop Socratic approaches to learning and teaching;  formal independent evaluation of such training  

  3. Delivery of training to those wishing to develop skills as Socratic facilitators

  4. Production of Manual to accompany Enquiring Minds, for those training to be facilitators and others interested in this methodology

  5. The organisation of Socratic Dialogues, including some on Mathematics, several times a year to extend opportunities for training and participation

  6. Establishment of Socratic dialogues for students and the community on the Isle of Wight

 

C.        Scholarship    

  1. New Research:

    a)         Contemporary challenges to Critical Philosophy

    b)         On Socratic Dialogue

    c)          Leonard Nelson and translation of selected texts, eg Logical Fallacies

  2. Production of Occasional Papers when appropriate

  3. Promotion of SFCP published work

  4. Organisation of SFCP files and archives

  5. Presentation & Attendance at significant Conferences
