Socratic Dialogue Week  Wűrzburg, Bavaria, Germany

30th March to 5th April 2007

The English-speaking group was facilitated by Dieter Krohn (Germany) on the question

How do I verify that a statement is correct?

Socratic Dialogue Report by Julie Matthews 13.04.07

Our facilitator (Dieter Krohn) began the session by asking us to verbalise a short statement of fact.  We then chose one of the statements to work with and spent the rest of our time discussing and analysing it.

I really enjoyed my trip and learned from a number of aspects of the dialogue:

The group dynamics were wonderful.  The whole group had fun, worked well together and were supportive, respectful and kind to one another.

The subject area was fascinating and I critically questioned my ontological perspectives of the given situation which has led to an increased self-awareness.

I learned more about my own style of communication and how to listen more effectively, contribute and state my own beliefs clearly and succinctly.

I learned a great deal from the other members of the group by observation of their communication styles and particularly from the style of facilitation (which was excellent).

I particularly enjoyed working at a slow pace and taking the subject to a micro level using skills of critical analysis and deconstruction.

The work will assist me in writing my Doctorate as I had the time to question and discuss a range of philosophical issues relating to the question.

I will use many of the skills I have developed with student groups and introduce them to the Socratic style and principles.

The venue was excellent, catering was superb and even the sun was shining!  I made lots of new friends and hope to attend many more dialogues in the future.
